Peach
Lake is a hamlet located mostly in the
Town of Southeast in Putnam County,
New York; a portion of Peach Lake is
in the Town of North Salem in
Westchester County, New York. As of
the 2000 census, the population was
1,671. The Peach Lake community is
west of
Danbury, CT, south of
Interstate 84 exit #1.
Peach Lake is in two towns;
North Salem and Southeast, and two
Counties; Westchester and Putnam.
There are four large residential
communities around Peach Lake. Three
cooperatives; Bloomerside and Vails
and Pietsch Gardens Cooperative and
'Northern Westchester Country Club'.
This once summer home area known as
Peach Lake area has a total area of
3.1 square miles.
The Lake: Peach Lake is located
in the Town of North Salem, NY and
part in the Town of Southeast, NY. The
Lake is one and a half miles long and
a half mile wide at its center. Peach
Lake drops to a depth of about 24 feet
at its deepest point. The Western side
of the Lake is deeper than the Eastern
side. A sharp thermo-cline is present
at a depth of about 11-13 where the
water temperature may change 15
degrees within an inch. This
thermo-cline protects the Lake from
excessive seaweed growth in areas of
the Lake that are deeper than the
thermo-cline layer as it is simply too
cold for the seaweed to start growing.
This temperature gradient is caused by
the natural springs that feed the
Lake. There are no rivers entering the
Lake and only a very small
intermittent stream on the
Southeastern corner.
As of the census of 2000, there were
1,671 people, 617 households, 468
families residing in the 743 housing.
The 617 households are comprosed of
which 37% had children under the age
of 18 living with them and 64% were
married couples living together. The
average household size was 2.71 and
the average family size was 3.16.
The median income for a household in
Peach Lake was $72,222, and the median
income for a family was $82,222. Males
had a median income of $55,529 versus
$39,479 for females. The per capita
income was $33,340. None of the
population or families were below the
poverty line.
North Salem is a town in the northeast
part of Westchester County, New York.
The population was 5,173 at the 2000
census. The north town line is the
border of Putnam County, New York and
the east town line is the border of
Connecticut.
North Salem total area of 32.9 square
miles is home to over 5,173 people,
1,764 households, 1,374 families
residing 1,979 housing units. There
were 1,764 households out of which
39.2% had children under the age of 18
living with them, 68.1% were married
couples living together.
The median income for a household in
the town was $100,280, and the median
income for a family was $109,468.
